Final Book

I finally finished my book. After all of the cuts and scraps, bruises and blood stains (lol)…my book case is finally complete. The only problem is…I don’t have any photos to show you.

It was probably the most difficult and most time-consuming project, but it was all worth it. Now, I just can’t let anyone touch it because I’m afraid they’ll dirty it…how practical is that? lol

I HATE PRINTING PROBLEMS!!!!

Okay..so I decide to start my printing early in advance, just to get a head start. I’m using the ‘Butterfly Binding’ (I think that’s what it’s called). Anyways, it turns out that the paper that I printed on was definitely not a good choice for this binding method chosen. I even tried 2 types of glue. The book binding glue made the pages ripple, and the rubber cement seeped through the pages, making the toner of the images seep through more pages. I

It was a complete and utter MESS!!!!

Yes, now I have my nervous breakdown because I have to design the pages in signatures!!! Ahhhh I thought this was almost over???

After that, I make the casing for it. Thank God for Reg and his generous extention.

Three Questions!!!

1. One problem that I have is NOT ENOUGH PHOTOGRAPHS. Basically, for my book I need to photograph 12 people (6-10) photos each, for each sign of the zodiac. For example, if you are a Pisces, your photographs will be the profiling for the ‘pisces’ chapter.

Is anyone willing to let me photograph them? It’s a very easy job and it’s fun!!!! :D:D please say yes!

I already have a Taurus, a Gemini, a Capricorn, and a Scorpio – if there is any other signs out there…please help!!!

2. I can’t seem to come up with a title for my book. It’s a book about modern zodiac profiling with a negative spin to it. I basically describe all the terrible traits about the 12 zodiacs. Are there any suggestions?

3. Should I make a compatibility section? To connect all the zodiacs together, some way?

WHAT I’VE BEEN WORKING ON…

- Origami of all the 12 zodiac signs (very difficult)

- Binding techniques (will be working with perfect binding)

- Working with different threads and needles

- Making a mock up of packaging (looking at different materials)

- Designing a layout for all 12 booklets

- Developing colour concepts for the 12 signs

WHAT I STILL HAVE TO DO…

- Take photo profiles of all 12 people (one for each zodiac sign)

- Develop a binding method for packaging

- Work with dimensions for final book

- Finish designing all 12 books

My unrealistic goals are making me go crazy. My goal is to find 12 different people, each having one of the 12 zodiac signs. Each booklet will be a profile on a particular person. I haven’t taken one photo yet. Is this bad? :S

Hello World: A Life in Ham Radio

This book, co-authored with Danny Gregory, was initiated by a flea market find. Danny bought an album full of QSL cards (postcards that ham radio operators exchange after they make contact on the air for the first time). The collection belonged to a man name Jerry Powell, who communicated with people all over the world for seventy-five years from his basement in Hackensack, New Jersey. The book documents Powell’s hobby through the cards. Through this information we learned about the people and places he communicated with.

WHAT I HAVE FIGURED OUT SO FAR…

- The dimensions of the book: 9″x7″ hard cover

- The cover will have die cuts, revealing a striking fly sheet underneath

- There will be 12 short chapters in the book, 1 for every zodiac sign (all of my research is finished, finally)

- There will be a short intro to the study of astrology and zodiac signs

- Each chapter will have: 1. Its own unique colour theme and illustrations, 2. A breakdown of personality and behaviour traits linked to each sign

WHAT I STILL NEED TO FIGURE OUT…

- Will I put the title of the book on the cover?

- What colour should be associated with what sign? (i.e. Aries=Red)

- What typefaces should I be using?

- How will I design my illustrations?

- What type of paper will I use? (texture, weight)

- How long should my chapters be?

- What binding method should I use?

GOALS…

- To get inspired for my illustrations

- To find 12 specific themes that relate to each zodiac sign

- To find colour combinations that work well with each individual theme

- To find a way to link certain signs together (i.e. opposite signs Aries and Libra)

- To start organizing my research into sections

- To design my own symbols (if there is time)

- To make a more modern zodiac book – staying away from traditional books

- To make an easy read for my audience

QUESTIONS TO ASK THE CLASS…

- Should I come up with a different name for the book?

- Where can I find some inspiration for imagery related to the topic of zodiacs?

- What is the easiest way to die cut squares without making a mess?

- And what THICKER material is best to die cut?
